FDA 510(k) Approvals

Last Updated: August 16, 2010
Updated: Monthly

This data is assembled from the U.S. FDA, and includes (where available) the Actual PDF files with the original application, justification for "substantial equivalence", indications for use, and the FDA approval letters. All PDF files are indexed, making them fully searchable by keyword for easy identification and targeting of search results.
Similar to the process of approving "generic" drugs, the 510K approval process is used to gain marketing approval for a device based on it being "substantially equivalent" to other previously approved devices. The approval process does allow for the application of new technology, since the "substantially equivalent" device can be made from different materials, but must meet the same efficacy and safety standards of the device it is being compared to. A successful 510(k) submission results in FDA permission to market the new device.
Sometimes devices requiring Premarket Notification are subject to conformance with “Special Controls” as directed by the FDA. Special Controls can be as simple as specific labeling, or more stringent product requirements.

An approved Premarket Approval Application (PMA) -- like an approved New Drug Application (NDA) -- is, in effect, a private license granted to the applicant for marketing a particular medical device.
The most regulated medical devices are Class III. A Class III device is one that supports or sustains human life, is of substantial importance in preventing impairment of human health, or presents a potential, unreasonable risk of illness or injury . All devices placed into Class III are subject to premarket approval requirements. Premarket approval by FDA is the required process of scientific review to ensure the safety and effectiveness of Class III devices.
